Witnesses of times gone by

Our hotel in San Candido dates back to around 1300 AD. Important names dating back to the early days of South Tyrolean tourism, like those of the innkeeper families Kopfsguter and Hellenstainer, are deeply entwined with the very fabric of this hotel, and have helped shape its history.

The hotel has been owned and operated by our family for over 250 years now. Its history has been colourful and eventful; full of good times and bad, with many trials and tribulations and also much success.

Located in the historical town centre, the 'Graue Bär' has witnessed much of the history and development of the village and its surroundings. For hundreds of years, the stagescoaches stopped here; then motorised vehicles drove past the hotel along the main road for many decades. And once the traffic was no longer seen as a sign of life, but rather as a disturbance, a modern pedestrian area was created, bringing peace and tranquility back to the 'Graue Bär'.
